Autorun USB Helper is one such program. Once it detects a new USB drive it scans it for any autorun program on it and executes it thus emulating autorun feature that was disabled on Windows 7 for USB devices for security purposes.
At the same time, the safety of the operation and authenticity of the executed file is guaranteed by strong checksum testing and the built-in white list. There are two main steps to reaching this most favorable state of affairs: first use AutoPlay Menu Designer to publish your desired menu to the USB flash drive, and then configure Autorun USB Helper to display the menu automatically on insertion.
In AutoPlay Menu Designer , put the finishing touches on your menu for instructions, see following tutorials. Then publish the menu to the USB drive:. For computers running on Windows 7 and higher, you will need to use Autorun USB Helper to enable automatic menu display.
First, download and install Autorun USB Helper, and once the setup completes you should see the program's icon in the system tray. In fact, this is the only step you need to make USB autorun function again. However, for better security we recommend adding the files you want to run into the white list of Autorun USB Helper.
To do this, right-click the system tray icon and select options:. Now the menu is configured to open every time when the USB device is connected. This process must be repeated on every client computer.

Chris - Support Engineer. In reply to Divya R's post on September 15, Hi Glink, I just did a bunch of research on this topic, and the ability to Autorun software on USB devices has been disabled in Windows 7 due to security issues.
An update was released that prevents this activity in XP and Vista as well. In reply to Chris - Support Engineer's post on September 22, Surly there has to be a way to enable it again? It is annoying This thread is a bit old, buts it has not been solved and I have been waiting for a solution for quite some time. CD and DVD are quickly becoming obsolete and many, many laptops are sold without one. So USB auto-run support has been stupidly disabled when it becomes more useful. The description and the linked article, How to disable the Autorun functionality in Windows are very understandable and straight forward, but after trying all possible, including the Fix it, it doesn't work for me.
I believe before going any further we need a simple right and straight answer to the main question: - Will that procedure really fix this MS silly decision that is a planned issue? Because almost everything can be changed if and when doing it the appropriate way. If it does, are we doing anything wrong that we must correct? If so, what and how? If not, then how to do it , please? This is important to many people.
It is unbelievable that MS has decided to implement something that is absolutely wrong. If people get viruses it is because they do not take precautions starting with a good anti-virus.
If a virus is present it will end up running, anyway. Dumb people should be advised not to run anything before taking precautions, check everything with an anti-virus , check autorun. When dumb, ignorant or careless people get viruses they should be taught, pay for learning and educated, not just cut off features that only their inaptedness turns against them.
Never make the others pay for their carelessness. If the registry values were not set before you install these updates, then the registry key settings will have to be set appropriately in order to disable Autorun capabilities.
Where are the updates for Windows Vista and Windows Server ? This issue may occur if some other program that is installed on the computer blocks the update from writing the registry entry. Such software may block the update during the installation of the update or may remove the registry entry after the computer is restarted.
To resolve this problem, install the update in safe mode. To do this, follow these steps:. In the Search for a download box, type the number of the Knowledge Base article that describes the update, and then click Go. Double-click the downloaded file to install it. If you are prompted to restart the computer, do so. Visit the Windows Update or Microsoft Update Web site to determine whether the update is offered again.
If you are offered the update again, continue to the next step. Install the update in safe mode. Safe mode disables most running processes and services. To install the update in safe mode, follow these steps:. Or, wait until Automatic Updates runs again.
