Some background: I did not add any new hardware or software recently. I have good antivirus protection Avira, MSSE , did a routine security patching of all programs about a week ago using secunia. Although, I have multiple antivirus programs and that can be a problem, they've worked fine on the problem computer for 6 months, and I have two other computers with the same OS and antivirus programs and they work fine too. As you were unable to perform repair installation also successfully, I would suggest you to disable automatic restart on system failure to obtain the exact error message.

Method 1: Disable automatic restart on system failure to get the exact error message. This option prevents Windows from automatically restarting if an error causes Windows to fail. Restart the computer. As the computer is restarting, press the F8 key repeatedly until you see the Windows Advanced Options screen. Method 2: Perform Disk check from the Recovery console. How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP. Note: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

Visit our Microsoft Answers Feedback Forum and let us know what you think. For example, the device pathname format for a standard bootable drive C configuration would look like this:. When Windows XP encounters a fatal error, the default setting for handling such an error is to automatically reboot the system. If the error occurs while Windows XP is booting, the operating system will become stuck in a reboot cycle--rebooting over and over instead of starting up normally.

In that case, you'll need to disable the option for automatically restarting on system failure. When Windows XP begins to boot up and you see the message Please select the operating system to start or hear the single beep, press [F8] to display the Windows Advanced Options Menu. Now, Windows XP will hang up when it encounters the error and with any luck, it will display a stop message you can use to diagnose the problem.

If you can't seem to repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you have a recent backup, you can restore the system from the backup media. The method you use to restore the system will depend on what backup utility you used, so you'll need to follow the utility's instructions on how to perform a restore operation.

If you can't repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you don't have a recent backup, you can perform an in-place upgrade. Doing so reinstalls the operating system into the same folder, just as if you were upgrading from one version of Windows to another.

An in-place upgrade will usually solve most, if not all, Windows boot problems. This screen will prompt you to press R to repair the selected installation or to press [Esc] to install a fresh copy of Windows XP. In this case, initiating a repair operation is synonymous with performing an in-place upgrade, so you'll need to press R. When you do so, Setup will examine the disk drives in the system. It will then begin performing the in-place upgrade. Keep in mind that after you perform an in-place upgrade or repair installation, you must reinstall all updates to Windows.

Once the format operation is complete, close the Format dialog box to return to My Computer, double-click the drive C icon to access the root directory, and copy the following three files to the floppy disk: Boot. Editor's Picks.

Before this problem occured I didn't install anything new no driver, no update Since I did the "fixboot", the safe mode is also stuck after the list of drivers loaded, it displays a black screen with only a "underscore" blinking and Now I'm there : can't boot in normal mode, can't boot in Safe mode anymore.

Any suggestion is welcome. Moreover, if someone knows if it's possible to read the windows event log under the recovery console, I'm also interested. If windows hangs at the loading screen it is probably hung on a custom driver. If you can get in safe mode, great, run msconfig and under "BOOT. You should see a list of drivers being loaded instead of the normal Windows logo. When it freezes, take note of what driver is trying to be loaded, then use google to look it up.

It most likely corresponds to a third party program that you should uninstall. Susprisingly Yahoo! Answers had a suggestion that seems valid. Use of an OEM disk will probable fail. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below.

Press Enter to start the Windows Setup. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Reapply updates or service packs applied since initial Windows XP installation. It seems that having done too much, you are almost out of options. You can try to use your boot cd to roll Windows back to a previous restore point. If you can't find a solution, you might have to do a repair installation as described by Ivo, and if this doesn't work horror then a full installation.

Before you try a repair I'd recommend booting to the Last Known Good configuration. The Last Known Good Configuration feature restores registry information and driver settings that were in effect the last time the computer started successfully. Another thing you can try is to disconnect all peripherals during boot. It's a very slim chance but worth trying - I have seen this work before when XP showed the symptoms you describe.

Does it always stop at the same point? If not the problem might be something else. I had one PC with XP that got stuck occasionally on the loading screen, the problem then got more frequent and it finally started to stop at different points immediately after turning on at the BIOS screen.

It helps you tackle different data loss situations. Telnet is a small application that can be used on your local device to communicate using a textbase, command line, bidirectional interactive terminal. Telnet use port 23 as the default telnet port to send and receive text data over the network.

Telnet was the chosen command line tool for communication over the network, you were able to open a connection using telnet to a remote device and, if the remote device had a telnet server installed on it you can run the command on that server. In late time, telnet protocol is less in use due to lake of security, telnet sends a receive pure text that is not encrypted and that why most of the terminal communication move to the Secure Shell known as SSH.

Telnet uses a default port for communication, the default telnet port is 23, but you can use telnet on any other port you want.

As telnet is a command line interface tool that expects parameters you can set the port you want to connect to. To do so, we need to open the command line interface.

Ask a question. Quick access. Search related threads. The default value is ten hours. The default value is seven days. The default value is five minutes. This default configuration forces users to change their passwords every six weeks, and compels them to use passwords that are not easy to guess. Policies like Minimum Password Age and Enforce Password History prevent the users from working around the password requirements by reusing the same few passwords and repeatedly changing passwords over a short time.

If you want to increase the password security on your network, you can modify these defaults by requiring longer passwords and more frequent changes. You can also relax security by disabling some or all of these policies. Tip Windows account policies have three possible states: enabled, disabled, and undefined. The difference between disabled and undefined comes into play when multiple Group Policy Objects apply to the same objects and the Windows operating system must resolve policy conflicts.

An enabled policy always overrides an undefined instance of the same policy, but a policy that is explicitly disabled might override an enabled instance of the same policy. You can apply the following targeting items to preference items:. Many Group Policy preference items share common options. Each preference item displays these options on the Common tab. The common options are consistent among the preference extensions and allow you to control the error handling for a particular extension, the security context the extension uses when processing user configuration settings, the scope and application of preference items, and item-level targeting, which provides filtering at the preference item level, in addition to Group Policy filtering.

By default, a failing preference item does not prevent other preference items in the same extension from processing.

If the Stop processing items in this extension if an error occurs on this item option is selected, a failing preference item prevents remaining preference items within the extension from processing. Preference extensions start processing preference items from the bottom of the list and work their way to the top. Preference items successfully applied prior to the failing preference item are applied.

The preference extension only stops processing preference items that follow the failing preference item. In this security context, the preference extension is limited to environment variables and system resources available only to the computer.

If the Run in logged-on user's security context option is selected, it changes the security context under which the preference item is processed. The preference extension processes preference items in the security context of the logged-on user. This allows the preference extension to access resources as the user rather than the computer. This can be especially important when using drive maps or other preferences in which the computer may not have permissions to resources or when using environment variables.

The value of many environment variables differs when evaluated in a security context other than the logged-on user. Group Policy applies policy settings and preference items to users and computers. You determine which users and computers receive these items by linking one or more Group Policy objects GPOs to Active Directory sites, domains, or organizational units.

User and computer objects that reside in these containers receive policy settings and preference items defined in the linked GPOs because they are within the scope of the GPO. Unlike policy settings, by default preference items are not removed when the hosting GPO becomes out of scope for the user or computer. If the Remove this item when it is no longer applied option is selected, it changes this behavior. After selecting this option, the preference extension determines if the preference item should not apply to targeted users or computers out of scope.

If the preference extension determines the preference item is out of scope, it removes the settings associated with the preference item. Selecting this option changes the action to Replace.

During Group Policy application, the preference extension recreates deletes and creates the results of the preference item. When the preference item is out of scope for the user or computer, the results of the preference item are deleted, but not created. Preference items can become out of scope by using item-level targeting or by higher-level Group Policy filters such as WMI and security group filters.

The Remove this item when it is no longer applied option is not available when the preference item action is set to Delete.

Resolved my issue. Clear instructions. It's a perfect alternative to the command line. If you don't consider yourself a pro-computer user and you're not familiar with command-lines, don't worry. There are graphical-based solutions to help you remove write-protection from your hard drives, USB drives, and even SD cards. EaseUS CleanGenius is one of these tools that helps you fix aforementioned issues on your drives without knowing a thing about command-line.

After following through with all the above solutions, hopefully, you have cleared the read-only error from the storage devices, and be able to use the drive again as normal. Now, you may open the drive to access and save new data to your drive.

Don't worry if you see now files show up or you cannot open saved data. The supplementary data recovery solution as presented in the next part can help. After removing the read-only error, some people may find their files are not visible or accessible. Formatting will make the device viable for data storage again but data will get erased.

You don't need to pay a penny to test its capability of finding lost data. For an attempt, we suggest you download the free version , which allows for 2GB file recovery for free. The software will immediately start scanning the selected drive for all lost data. During the scan, you can see more and more data showing up in the results. On this page, we explained what is Read-only error, what causes this error, and how to fully remove read-only from hard drive, USB, SD card, etc.

If you are having a similar issue on your hard drive, check if you are logging as administrator first. If not, switch to the administrator account. If the drive is still read-only, try to take ownership of your drive. Then you can turn to DiskPart cmd command - attributes disk clear readonly to remove this issue. After this, you can try to open your drive and modify the saved data again. Besides restoring lost files, you can also apply this software to scan a whole disk or even lost partition for retrieving vital files.

He mainly writes articles about data recovery tutorials on PC and Mac and how-to tips for partition management. He always keeps an eye on new releases and likes various electronic products. It's far from perfect, partly because today's advanced disk technology makes data-recovery more difficult than it was with the simpler technology of the past. It comes with a selection of advanced features, including partition recovery, formatted drive restoration, and corrupted file repair.

Screen Recorder. Transfer Products. File Management. More Products. To edit this type of read-only file, you'd want to edit the file in a folder that does allow editing, and then move the newly created file into the original file's folder, overwriting the original.

Instead of editing and saving the hosts file directly back to the "etc" folder, which isn't permitted, you have to do all the work elsewhere, like on the Desktop, and then copy it back over. Specifically, in the case of the hosts file, it would go like this:. Copy hosts from the etc folder to the Desktop. Make the changes to the hosts file that's on the Desktop. Copy the hosts file on the Desktop to the etc folder.

Confirm the file overwrite. Editing read-only files work this way because you're not actually editing the same file, you're making a new one and replacing the old one.

Several scenarios might lead to an Excel spreadsheet opening as read-only. For instance, if the file is password-protected or was shared as a copy , it might open as read-only. Right-click the file and choose Properties to see if the Read-only attribute is checked.

If so, clear the checkbox to edit the file. QuickBooks files might open as read-only if stored on a DVD or CD, in which case you can copy the file to your computer's hard drive before opening it. In addition, some files are read-only to protect from accidental edits, which you can resolve by running QuickBooks as an administrator.

Just use phone activation and 9 out of 10 times they'll let you transfer the license. What I normally do with win 7 oem is reuse the old hdd with oem win7 on it into the new tower and it has always activated online but there's a first time for anything.

Weird how much ambiguity there is here. I'm going to change the motherboard only if new instructions become available for new CPUs that make it impossible to run certain games on my current one. No issues. I've done the same with a Vista OEM key as well. No problems. From Microsoft themselves I know an ex-employee : Generally, an end user can upgrade or replace all of the hardware components on a computer—except the motherboard—and still retain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software.

Windows Activation see and access minor changes each time, so long other components are still the same. If the motherboard is upgraded or replaced for reasons other than a defect , then a new computer has been created. Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred to the new computer, and the license of new operating system software is required. Understanding that end users, over time, upgrade their PCs with different components, Microsoft needed to have one base component "left standing" that would still define the original PC.

Since the motherboard contains the CPU and is the "heart and soul" of the PC, when the motherboard is replaced for reasons other than defect a new PC is essentially created. The original system builder did not manufacture this new PC, and therefore cannot be expected to support it. Unwritten rule: Microsoft staff when contacted for a re-activation will however allow this motherboard replacement due to damage exception anyways in most cases. Specially if it's a new or similar model from the same manufacture, due to the previous model they where using being discontinued.

When I went to configure Outlook the configuration got all screwed up, so I just restored a prior image, and after a major monkey drill got Outlook working. Well I was bummed, but there was nothing I could do at that point. I finished installing all the Office software, more Windows Updates and got a system that was configured like I wanted.

But the brief upgrade to Win-7 Pro haunted me. I figured I had nothing to lose, so I imaged the Final-Final configuration in case it got all hosed up and went to "Windows Anytime Upgrade" again. I entered my key, it went through the same steps as it did before, and I was waiting for the message But none showed up. It upgraded the installation to Pro, and activated no problem.

I couldn't believe it. I guess this means that you can upgrade any version of Windows to any other version provided you have the correct key, in my case, a legit Professional key. This kinda reinforces the fact that not only are all of the versions present in a stock image, by removing the ei.

Looks like Microsoft learned a few things from IBM. If you wanted to upgrade the memory, a tech came out and did something, but people began to notice that the tech didn't install anything. After a while on of the techs spilled the beans on IBM and it became to be known as the Golden Screwdriver. The description fit too, if you don't come up with the gold, you're screwed.

Anyway it was a learning experience for me. Give it a shot. But be sure to image your system before you try it, in case something goes wrong. You must log in or sign up to post here. You cannot use OEM on any machines you are keeping for yourself or your company. I don't have a link to that, but I bet Chris Microsoft does. OEM is for pre-installation or for System Builders to reseller the software.

If you want to build a whitebox PC, with Windows 10 you need to use a full Retail license for the device if you want to run Windows It also requires that software be installed using the OEM pre-installation tools.

Basically leaves it to where the end user has to agree to the EULA and it runs through the mini-setup so the user can name it and all that. MS generally leaves license compliance in your hands. They do care - they have sued plenty of people to prove that.
