You have to make your way to a specified end zone with your cargo intact, all while a timer is ticking down your remaining seconds. Extra time can be gained by ramming into certain vehicles, but money will be deducted from you when someone hits your truck.
With games and upgrades to acquire for your truck, this is one arcade-racing-port that you should definitely add into your collection.
It was the first basketball game with an online mode, and the gameplay just felt a lot smoother and more enjoyable than its predecessor, NBA 2K. Famous street courts such as Rucker Park and Goat Park featured in a computer game for the very first time, which was a huge deal for basketball fans who had grown up playing in homegrown clubs and honing their skills in the neighbourhood after school. I liked this game because it had so many memorable challenges on it.
Hydro Thunder provides all of the thrills of F-Zero X on the water, with the Dreamcast creating some stunning scenes for you to race through. In a change from traditional racing games, Hyrdo Thunder sees players racing gnarly speed boats along a series of water-based courses. Players can choose from easy to handle boats or ones that fly through the course faster than an erratic fruit fly on speed, using boost ramps to get from A to B without crashing and hopefully beating your opponents.
The individual courses in Hyrdo Thunder are what made it such an exciting title. You could race around the Arctic Circle, through green valleys, and even through a post-apocalyptic and flooded New York City. Hydro Thunder was a perfect launch title for the Dreamcast back in the day, and I strongly recommend that you give it a try if your nerves can take the speed, that is. Sega love a good platform game, and the next title in our list of the best Dreamcast games was a huge success over in Japan.
Napple Tale: Arsia in Daydream was released back in the year Time runs much differently here, and the four seasons we experience here in the real world are all set up as seperate locations. The game is primarily 2. Bomberman is a classic on any console, and the fact that it came with online play only made the tried and tested formula even better. This game sees you entering the Bomblympics in a bid to retain your title as the hero of Planet Bomber. This was the last game to ever be released for the Dreamcast in Europe too, and I can remember seeing this on sale in Game back in But what is Cannon Spike all about?
Well, players have to lock onto monsters and blow them to pieces with a range of different attacks. Mindless fun is the aim of the game in Cannon Spike. Next up on our list of the best Dreamcast games is ChuChu Rocket! The aim of the game is to direct mice into escape rockets so that they can get away from hungry cats.
Critics and the gaming public alike went mad for this game. It topped the charts in Japan when it first came out, and it was also the fist Sega release on a Nintendo console in the form of a GBA launch title. If only the Dreamcast could have got into one of those rockets and escaped its own terrible fate too! I considered long and hard whether to include this title in our list. Good games need to evoke a strong reaction with players, even if it is being scared out of your pants.
The original arcade game with the light rail gun was a huge success, and the Dreamcast port allowed hardy gamers to experience some undead slaying action from the comfort of their own homes. The House Of The Dead 2 has a cool multiple path feature.
It allows gamers to experience different scenarios determined by which direction they take, but they all lead to the same point at the end. While the game is great, the Dreamcast port could have been so much better if the pre-rendered graphics had been updated. The Dreamcast was a powerful machine, but it failed to make the game look any better than the PlayStation offering. Still, this game is one that any horror fans should have in their arsenal and, although short lived, it still has one of the most terrifying baddies of all time in it.
Head-to-head death matches never looked so good thanks to the Unreal Engine that powers this title. The graphics are superb, far outshining what you might expect from a Dreamcast game.
Critics went crazy for it, and rightly so. Unreal Tournament has multiple modes such as capture the flag, last man standing, and domination. In true Goldeneye-style, body armour and a whole host of mad weapons can be picked up as you search the levels for other players to wipe out. You can fight against bots in single player mode while working your way up a tournament ladder, or you can destroy your mates while kicking back with a few beers.
This next fast-paced racer was made exclusively for the Dreamcast and was officially intended to be a launch title. It was one of the first games to introduce the idea of a Kudos points system, where players are rewarded for slick driving moves. The main levels are based around London, Tokyo, and San Francisco, and they look a lot like the real thing too. The graphics are swish, and there were plenty of nice cars to choose from. Player garages could hold up to 6 cars, so you had to pick your ultimate favourites.
If the player logged on to their Dreamcast at 9am in London, then all of the races in San Fransisco would be at night. Likewise, if you logged on at 12am, the American races would be in glorious sunshine. Details like that really make a lasting connection with a player. Given that there were a whopping tracks to play from, all in different time zones, this game had a huge re-playability factor.
Most of these were unlocked through the one-player mode and could be enjoyed again and again with a friend. The next title in our list of the best Dreamcast games is a space-age music video game.
And for some reason, MJ makes a cameo appearance! Well, the game is set in a futuristic world where rival news channels are constantly competing against each other. Ulala, a reporter for Space Channel 5, is reporting on the invasion of an alien race, but she soon finds herself in hot water. Ulala must dance and shoot her way through the various stages in Space Channel 5. Dancing stages revolve around her copying the moves of her opponents and generally getting her groove on. Shooting stages, on the other hand, see her defeating enemies, rescuing hostages, and generally being a bad-ass.
The game was a little bit of a slow burner when it first came out. Critics went on to give it good reviews, and Ulala has since gone on to become a bit of a heroine in the gaming cosplay world. Well, you can now pick up more than one passenger, and there are a couple of new levels based on New York for you to play through.
Sega sure knew how to make some weird games as well as groundbreaking ones. And the weird ones have all developed cult followings that have made them, despite all of the odds, extremely popular. Expect weird fathers, a bunch of teens who get trapped in a horror theme park, and lots of blood and gore along the way.
The player starts off controlling Eriko Christy a girl who heads into the themepark to try to rescue her friends. More characters can be unlocked as Eriko completes the various tasks and challenges that are lurking around every corner. NFL 2K1 is far more than just another football game for me to get my ass whooped at. Without it, the Dreamcast would have been a bit low on the ground with sporting titles. Unfazed, Sega bought Visual Concepts and not only made a game that rivalled Madden in every way, shape and form, but also made a gaming franchise that is still battling EA to this day.
NFL 2K1 was one of the first sports games of the time with online multiplayer action. The graphics, as you can see in the image above, were far superior than other titles of the time too. According to Metacritic, this is the 14th best game ever made! NFL most definitely deserves this spot in our list of the best Dreamcast games! The branching paths and intertwining stories in Resident Evil 2 made it such an exciting game to play, especially when twinned with hordes of zombies that find human flesh so irresistible.
Both critics and players alike were convinced that nothing could top the original game, but Resident Evil 2 brought better graphics, puzzles, audio, and gameplay, making it the perfect survival horror title and the best game in the genre at the time. Resident Evil 2 is a classic game with all of the mindless-zombie-killing action that we have come to know and love over the years. For newbies to the series, this game provides a great way to blow off steam and a narrative that has, quite literally, jumped out of a comic book series.
Like Shenmue, Sword of the Beserk was one of the first games on the scene to make use of quick-time events. Once the rockets were full, the mice would launch to safety. It was simple, but deviously challenging puzzling, and the single player was an entertaining distraction.
The multiplayer is what really made the game, and the goal was to save as many mice as possible, whilst sending cats over to your opponent, thus causing them all sorts of grief. The most mice saved would ensure the win. Amazingly enough, the Dead Or Alive series had a lot more going for it than its mammoth mammaries, and underneath the juggling jugs was a great fighting game packed with game modes.
It may not have been quite as interesting as the likes of Soul Calibur , or quite as technical as Virtua Fighter , but it was a very popular series, and DOA2 on the Dreamcast was one of the best fighters at the time. The combat system followed the Final Fantasy formula pretty much down the line, but mixed in some limited character movement, which made things feel a little more dynamic.
The system also used a timer that dictated when both allies and enemies could attack. Careful timing could lead to move cancels, you could perform combination moves, and counters were also possible. The game was released on other formats later, but these are considered by most to be inferior to the original Dreamcast release.
Long before zombies were cool, Sega was slaying the undead with style, and the quality arcade blasting and impressive boss fights were complemented by a ridiculously cheesy plot and terrible voice acting.
As Jack Wade, a bounty hunter suffering from amnesia after waking up in a strange lab, you had to complete a series of missions, capturing the most deadly criminals in the city, whilst uncovering a seedy conspiracy. Okay, so the bike sections were pretty superfluous and were dropped for the sequel , and the controls and camera needed work, but the great story and quirky, organ-donating futuristic world paired up with solid gameplay to make for a great game.
Capcom was always the master of 2D combat, but with Power Stone , it branched out into a very different kind of 3D fighter. The original was one of the launch titles for the DC, but the second managed to hit all of the notes, as well as adding four player battles to the mix. The game played very much like a 3D Smash Bros, and players had to fight to be the last one standing to win. The game was pretty simple, but like so many things, this simplicity made it all the better, and it was one of the best party games on the platform.
It was a dance game with a difference, and one that became an instant party classic. Now selling for pretty high prices, the original Dreamcast version, or Ver. This is mostly down to the included maracas, which worked excellently on the DC. It also lacked maracas, and used Wii remotes instead.
If you can find the game on eBay, or second hand for a decent price, the DC original is well worth picking up. The game that launched a thousand cel-shaders. Jet Set Radio may be remembered by most for its stunning, and then revolutionary, cel-shaded visuals and funky soundtrack, but it should also be remembered for its excellent gamelay too. As a spraycan-wielding in-line skater, your task was to skate around the futuristic city of Tokyo-to, throwing up graffiti tags and murals in order to rebel against the police and rival gangs.
Your gang, the GGs, began with main character, Beat, and eventually grew to include more playable skaters as the game progressed. The gameplay is much like previous titles, incorporating puzzles, environment interactions, zombie battles, and item gathering.
Characters' environment interactions have been slightly expanded, with players now being able to fully climb objects. The terror of anticipation from previous titles is equally prevalent here; players will be required to use their wits as much as their guts while they puzzle-solve and fight their way to freedom. Resident Evil Code: Veronica is a classic and remains one of the best titles in its series, but it's also one of the best titles ever created for the Sega Dreamcast.
Its relevance in modern gaming remains noteworthy, with longtime fans pleading for Capcom to give this title the Remake treatment much like Resident Evil 2 and 3. Although in present-day Soulcalibur is largely regarded as a standard fighting series, at the time of its first title's release, it was viewed as an innovative masterpiece.
The main story of Soulcalibur revolves around an extremely powerful weapon referred to as the 'Soul Edge. Nightmare, the game's main antagonist, has recently acquired the Soul Edge, and it's up to the rest of the game's cast to stop his killing spree. Soulcalibur is regarded as one of the only instances where a port outperforms its arcade-version graphically. Ultimately, the Dreamcast iteration of this title was the best version, providing players with crisp visuals and an unprecedented combat and movement system.
Developers focused on diversifying gameplay by expanding its fundamentals. Players are able to move in eight directions rather than on a sole axis , combo buffering has been increased to promote greater ease of combo strings, and guard timing impacts the strength of a block which can now be used offensively.
At a time where so many fighting game titles were focused on refining their controls and increasing skill scaling, Soulcalibur sought to provide an exciting experience that was equally accessible to players, both casual and professional. The grandiosity of Soulcalibur's achievements is much easier to appreciate in retrospect. Its forward-thinking development of gameplay, refined port, and uniquely dark narrative all attracted a new audience to the world of fighting games.
Crazy taxi is a game that is intrinsically tied to novelty and its respective period of gaming. At a point in time where so many genres awkwardly attempted to converge or commingle, Crazy Taxi somehow formulated the perfect balance. Part action and part racing, Crazy Taxi throws players into chaotic and fast-paced gameplay from the moment they open the game.
As a taxi driver, players must race to take passengers to and from their destinations. But during the journey between destinations, players must attempt to perform tricks and jumps to increase their score.
For fans of the title who initially only played the Arcade-version, the Dreamcast port is a substantial and gratifying upgrade. While the arcade-version only offered a single stage for players to enjoy, the Dreamcast version also includes a second stage.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a title that sets new standards for 3D platforming titles. With the noteworthy popularity and success of its predecessor, Sonic Adventure 2 had a lot of hype to live up to. Shockingly enough, Sonic Adventure 2 surpassed expectations and hype and ended up being an even more enjoyable, refined, and well-made title than its predecessor.
Similarly to Sonic Adventure, players are able to choose from a number of familiar characters who all have noticeably different playstyles. Choose between Sonic and Shadow, Tails and Eggman, or Knuckles and Rouge as you decide on your part to play in the fate of the universe.
Both Sonic and Shadow have extremely fast-paced, enthralling gameplay, with running and combat mechanics having been noticeably upgraded since the prior title. Tails and Eggman control mechs that allow players to shoot, fly, and puzzle solve their way out of a variety of scenarios.
Knuckles and Rouge are scavengers, allowing players to seek out pieces of the chaos emeralds while fighting anyone who gets in their path.
The graphics and narrative are equally beautiful and passionately developed in this title. Sonic Adventure 2 is, potentially, the best title ever released on the Dreamcast. Not necessarily for its influence or innovation, but for its impact, detailed characters and narrative, refined gameplay, and ground-breaking visuals. For fans of competitive fighting games, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 has always been viewed as one of the best fighting games of all time.
In the present, crossover fighting games are seen as relatively standard, but titles like Marvel vs. Capcom 2 helped to popularize crossover fighting games early on. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is notable for its visual style. Being the first Marvel vs. Capcom title to feature 2. At a time where so many fighting games were split between 2D and 3D graphics, 2.
Between this game's gorgeous visuals and its chaotic soundtrack, battles have never felt more explosive. The gameplay is extremely refined and expanded relative to the first Marvel vs. The title saw the addition of meaningful gameplay features like three-vs-three battles and character assists.
Capcom 2 also enables players to perform combos and attacks more easily. The character roster is filled with more Marvel and Capcom faces than ever before, totaling a massive 56 fighters.
