Windows xp will not open any programs

For example, the device pathname format for a standard bootable drive C configuration would look like this:. When Windows XP encounters a fatal error, the default setting for handling such an error is to automatically reboot the system.

If the error occurs while Windows XP is booting, the operating system will become stuck in a reboot cycle--rebooting over and over instead of starting up normally. In that case, you'll need to disable the option for automatically restarting on system failure. When Windows XP begins to boot up and you see the message Please select the operating system to start or hear the single beep, press [F8] to display the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

Now, Windows XP will hang up when it encounters the error and with any luck, it will display a stop message you can use to diagnose the problem. If you can't seem to repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you have a recent backup, you can restore the system from the backup media. The method you use to restore the system will depend on what backup utility you used, so you'll need to follow the utility's instructions on how to perform a restore operation.

If you can't repair a Windows XP system that won't boot and you don't have a recent backup, you can perform an in-place upgrade. Doing so reinstalls the operating system into the same folder, just as if you were upgrading from one version of Windows to another. An in-place upgrade will usually solve most, if not all, Windows boot problems. This screen will prompt you to press R to repair the selected installation or to press [Esc] to install a fresh copy of Windows XP.

In this case, initiating a repair operation is synonymous with performing an in-place upgrade, so you'll need to press R. When you do so, Setup will examine the disk drives in the system. It will then begin performing the in-place upgrade. Keep in mind that after you perform an in-place upgrade or repair installation, you must reinstall all updates to Windows.

Once the format operation is complete, close the Format dialog box to return to My Computer, double-click the drive C icon to access the root directory, and copy the following three files to the floppy disk: Boot.

Editor's Picks. If not, at least run it in Safe Mode, it's better than nothing. To do so, Please download and install HijackThis by clicking here. Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile. The log will be saved in Notepad.

Copy and paste the log in your next post. Oh no. I was worried about this, but I trusted my friends. I'm fairly sure I won't be able to do a system restore in the normal mode, since I can't get it to do anything. I can try it in safe mode.

I was not able to download hijack this before my computer crashed again. I'm computer illiterate enough to not know - can I download stuff in safe mode? I noticed that when I ran my virus and spy ware stuff in safe mode, it only took minutes, when it usually takes hours.

You might not be able to access the Internet in Safe Mode. You should copy the HijackThis executable from a working computer onto a USB flash drive and insert it into your faulty computer. But first, try the System Restore in Safe Mode. Okay, so I booted up in safe mode, and picked a restore point from a month ago. I am able to open programs when I click on them now.

Joined May 3, Messages 22, Well one thing I can see right off is you cannot run 2 antivirus programs at the same time as that would seriously slow things down. Uninstall MacAfee or Avg for certain. I would bet we have a dying hard drive or incompatible or corrupted ram but you have told us 0 hardware and I cannot go on and predict anything without knowing hardware or computer brand and model. Sorry, I started posting at work, as I wasn't sure I'd get my computer up and running to be able to post at home.

I added the info at the end of my last post, but I'll add it to the OP as well. I'm not computer literate enough to know if this answers your question about the hardware. Thanks for your help.

Well, two antivirus programs will definitely not work well together and conflicts will occur. It will also slow your system dramatically, especially with McAfee!

Uninstall one for sure. You could also trim down your Startup entries quite a bit. Definitely will do. But that isn't the cause of my not being able to open anything by clicking on them a couple of days ago, right?

I've had them both on there for a good several months now, and the problem with things running slower only started in the past couple of weeks. I also have another question. In the past 2 days, when I had my computer working, I was going through and cleaning up. I was deleting programs I no longer use, etc. However, now that I did the system restore, I see that those programs I deleted are back.

What can I do about that? Thanks again for the help. Knowing the hardware I would bet your hard drive is dying on you and the rest of the slowness is 2 antivirus programs and the damage ccleaner did. Pages: [ 1 ] Go Down. Author Topic: Can not open programs or folders or anything XP. Read times. She tells me her laptop became very slow and after a reboot she was not able to open any programs. She can not open the start menu or any folders or other desktop icons.

She also can not access the task manager. She can right click on icons, the menu appears as normal yet nothing happens when trying to open anything.

We have booted into safe mode where all programs seem to function as normal. I have been reading around online and found lots of threads which describe similar scenarios, on similar operating systems. But most are either very old or different enough for me to think it is worth a new thread.

I apologize if I may be mistaken on that. In the similar solutions most people seem to regard the problem as virus related and say the first thing to do is a scan something about disabling executables or something. We have tried downloading AVG or similar through safe mode, but it crashes whenever we try. As I said we cant run a thing in normal mode, so no access to AV software I have also tried to run a system restore from the safe mode with command line.

We got to selecting a recent file but whenever we hit next nothing seemed to happen. No indication of loading or processing, so we gave up after around 5 mins. In safemode she was able to open regedit and we checked for the.
